The Langford Store was established in 1928 by E B Langford, as a purpose-built general store and post office. He passed the reins on to his granddaughter Lorna in 1947 who ran it for 60 years, Monday to Friday, making it famous by never changing a thing as the world changed around her. She was 78 before passing the torch to current owner Sukhita Langford in 2008.
Over time the locals have used the store for supplies but with the main customer base now in tourism, the store has shifted its focus with the incorporation of a café into the business and converting the storeroom into an art gallery. This general store and post office that has been providing essentials to the Bainham community and travellers since 1928, is now a jewel in the crown of essential places to experience in Golden Bay and a place where collections and connections can be found and made.
In-store you will find the shelves filled with an eclectic mix of recycled vintage and retro treasures. Sukhita is the creator of the Kiwi-themed Bucket Hats and Aprons, while husband Will is the baker of sublime sweet treats. Hospitality knows no bounds as you enjoy a pot of tea, an espresso coffee or simply soak up the atmosphere and nostalgia whilst enjoying the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding scenery. We hope to see you one day soon.
